Guide for Cool Climate Succession Sowing: Spring-Autumn

Here is a guide I’ve compiled to succession planting in spring-autumn for cool temperate climates in the southern hemisphere.

I put together this information using two books which I refer to all the time:

  • The Kitchen Garden Companion, Stephanie Alexander
  • Organic Gardening in Australia, Pauline Pears (ed)

At the time of writing, I have not really practiced these schedules in my local climate – which has warm-hot summers. So if you live in a cool climate with warm-hot summers, let me know if you think there are any mistakes. There are so many variables in local climates.

I’ve also used my own views on how much of something I use to determine the number of plants you need in between sowings/plantings. To calculate this for your own family, think about how many plants you would typically use in a week and multiply by the number of weeks between sowings.

Remember that the “number of plants” column refers to the final number of plants required. You should refer to sowing guides and germination rates on seed packets to ensure you get enough seeds germinating to reach the final number of plants required.

Where sowing in pots, refer to guides on minimum temperature of soil required for germination and use a greenhouse or heated propagation tray where required.
